Globally, pre-term birth is a major cause of death among children with age ≤5 years. Premature babies are at a higher risk of death or developmental delay. A recent review which included the results of 70 clinical trials, has evaluated the association between omega-3 supplementation and pre-term birth. The researchers have reported that daily intake of long-chain omega-3s reduced the risk of premature birth.

This review also found that optimum daily dose of omega-3s (500-1000mg) from the 12 th week of pregnancy is required for better outcomes. The unavailability of a number of preventive options makes omega-3 supplementation an effective strategy for the prevention of pre-term birth. Source: Science Daily
