The COVID-19 pandemic had increased the demand for health services to an unprecedented level worldwide. To overcome this and to provide health services to everyone who was infected with SARS-CoV-2, many countries turned to private hospitals to augment public capacities. To prevent private hospitals from overcharging COVID-19 patients, many Indian states, including Maharashtra, introduced regulation of rates for COVID-19 treatment.

A recent study analyzed how patients were overcharged in private hospitals in Maharashtra Β for COVID treatment despite the implementation of treatment rate regulations.
