Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is linked to negative personality traits such as high neuroticism and low conscientiousness. Emerging research indicates that psychedelics like psilocybin can change personality traits. However, the impact of psilocybin on AUD-related personality abnormalities remains underexplored. To address this gap, a study has examined whether psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) could improve personality traits in 84 adults with AUD.

In the study, participants received two sessions of psilocybin and 12 weekly psychotherapy sessions and were followed up for 24 weeks. The results revealed that the psilocybin group experienced significant reductions in neuroticism and increases in extraversion and openness compared to the placebo group.
