Gut-derived infections are common complications in critically ill patients that could cause sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome(MODS). 1 Sepsis is considered as a the most frequent cause of mortality in hospitalized patients. 2 Evidence suggests that disturbance of gut microbial balance probably plays an active role in the development of sepsis. 1 Hence, innovations focused on protecting or restoring gut microbial flora might be effective in the prevention of sepsis.
3 The article reviews the potential therapeutic effects of gut microbiota-targeted strategies in the management of sepsis. In critical illness, gut microbial imbalance or dysbiosis may lead to the development and expansion of pathobionts.
