Synopsis The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) suggests a combination of long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist (LAMA) and long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) for initiation or escalation of treatment in patients with increased symptom burden. A combination of LABA/LAMA is technically challenging, and hence there was a need for development of a dual-pharmacology agent belonging to the class of muscarinic antagonist β2−agonist (MABA) to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Advantages of MABA include: Combination of two mechanisms within a single drug acting at β2 and muscarinic receptors. A fixed ratio of LAMA/LABA activity delivered into each lung region.

Potential for synergistic bronchodilation. Able to include another drug, such as an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) or another anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment plan. This Journal Watch…
