Systemic allergic reactions can be fatal and fear of such systemic reaction (SR) can lead to life impairment. Recent reports confirm that venom immunotherapy (VIT) is an effective treatment for people who have had a systemic allergic reaction to an insect sting. The present article tries to unravel some current perspectives on this immunotherapy. Insect hypersensitivity affects about 7.5% of the population. Interestingly, Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is the most effective form of specific immunotherapy to date.
It is able to protect insect venom-allergic patients against life-threatening sting reactions. VIT has been a model for efficacy and reliability for allergic immunotherapy using standardised treatment regimens achieving improvement in the quality of life.
