Surgical site infection (SSI) is the most surveyed and frequent type of hospital acquired infection and affects up to one-third of patients who have undergone a surgical procedure as per the WHO. SSIs can be fatal and contributes to spreading of antibiotic resistance. Also, treating SSIs imposes a substantial strain on the financial resources of the hospitals. This article highlights causes and risk factors associated with SSIs.
