The Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-borne arbovirus especially prevalent in tropical regions and has been the cause of major epidemics in recent years. 1 Symptoms of this disease include severe arthralgia, high fever,  maculopapular rash, and viremia. The current treatment options are non-specific and include antivirals and antipyretics along with anti-rheumatic drugs for patients with severe joint pains.

Since neither specific treatment nor vaccine is available for chikungunya, there is an urgent need for prophylaxis against chikungunya virus infection.
