Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is a global health disorder that affects >70 million people globally. HCV begins with an acute infection, which substantially becomes severe, leading to chronic hepatitis in 80% of the cases. With the wide variation in the distribution of genotypes geographically, genotype 1 (G1) is most common worldwide, whereas genotype 3 (G3) is commonly detected among Indian populations. Although newer drugs are being introduced, economically weaker countries like India should soon incorporate it into the treatment guidelines.
In this review, we will discuss the prevalence of HCV infection along with an overview update on the treatment modalities globally and in India.
