Trauma accounts for a large proportion of deaths and injuries worldwide. Globally, it is the sixth-leading cause of death and injury, leading to five million or 10% of all deaths. Nearly half of the deaths occur in people aged 15-45 years. In males, mortality due to injuries is twice as likely as in females. In many developing countries, there is an unacceptable rise in trauma mortality and morbidity relative to developed countries due to inadequate health services.
Around 73.7% of deaths from trauma can be prevented. The factors affecting favorable outcomes following trauma include cost-effective intervention, on-site emergency services, staff expertise, infrastructure provision, adequate care centers, and access to specialist care.
