An entrepreneurial engineer from the USA has developed a lab-on-chip medical imaging tool that can make ultrasounds accessible to all. One need not have a lab technician to figure out how to operate this new device. One can simply attach this device to the smartphone and it can work as an ultrasound. The technology combines a bit of artificial intelligence and microelectronics to put all the necessary components of the ultrasound together in a smaller device which can be attached to the smartphone.
If we decide to look at using ultrasound beyond checking fetal growth, this can be one radical diagnostic imaging tool for examining internal organs in the body. This device can be useful in the emergency situations or in the remote rural areas where machines like MRI or CT are not available in the nearest labs. Do you think, such devices are helpful in our country especially in rural areas?
