The USFDA has approved the drug oliceridine for the management of moderate-to-severe acute pain in adult patients for whom other alternatives are not adequate. The drug is an opioid agonist and has been approved for short term intravenous administration in hospital settings and during inpatient and outpatient procedures. The maximum recommended daily dose is 27 milligrams. The approval was based on a randomized, controlled clinical trial that assessed its safety and efficacy against the placebo formulation.
The study was carried out in 1535 patients who had undergone surgical procedures. Patients who received oliceridine showed a decrease in the pain as compared to the placebo. The most common side effects included nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, and constipation .
