The USFDA has approved a new drug for prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positive lesions in prostate cancer patients. Gallium 68 PSMA-11 (Ga 68 PSMA-11) is the first drug approved for PSMA- targeted positron emission tomography (PET) imaging based on elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in suspected cases of prostate cancer metastasis and recurrence. The Ga 68 PMSA-11 is a radioactive drug given intravenously before PET scan procedures. The drug has shown no severe adverse reactions except the common reactions like nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Though the drug Ga 68 PMSA-11 has proven its efficacy and safety in clinical trials, researchers have stated the risk of misdiagnosis due to its binding affinity to other cancers or non-malignant processes. Besides, long-term cumulative exposure to such radiation may lead to an increased risk of cancer. Source: FDA…
