The USFDA has recently approved a new indication for calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybate oral solution. The drug has already been approved to treat cataplexy or excessive daytime sleepiness in patients seven years or older with narcolepsy, and can now be used to treat idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) in adults. Idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by an insatiable desire to sleep. Individuals with IH sleep normally or long amounts of time each night but still feel excessively sleepy during the day.

The common symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing sleep, and severe sleep inertia. The efficacy of the oxybate oral solution in IH was assessed in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized-withdrawal trial. 154 adult patients with IH, aged 19 to 75 years were included in the trial.
