The patients who are at a high risk of sudden arrhythmic death have been benefitted by the implantable cardioverter defibrillator. But studies have shown that arrhythmic risk may pose temporarily depending on the proarrhythmic conditions. Therefore, to enable a better selection of patients for ICD therapy, the wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) was introduced. The WCD possesses the characteristics of ICD but does not need implantation.

It presents with a non-invasive approach to prevent sudden arrhythmic until ICD implantation is indicated.
