Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)  affects 500 million people worldwide. This disease poses major healthcare and economic burden globally owing to its various systemic complications, including retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy, and the high risk (five times more than in non-diabetic individuals) of cardiovascular disease. Metformin remains the gold standard antidiabetic drug; however, additional drugs are often needed to achieve and maintain the established target glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels of less than 7%.
