Recently there have been concerns about the exposed hair in the operating room and it is speculated that it could increase the risk of surgical site infections. However, there was no experimental data to support or deny this hypothesis. In this regard, a recent study tried to address this issue by comparing different types of surgical caps in mock operative settings and checked their efficiency in terms of minimizing operating room infections.
The findings showed that cloth skullcaps protect against contamination of operating rooms better than can disposable skull caps or bouffant hats. However, some argue that the biggest disadvantage of using cloth caps is they must be washed and cleaned properly and most hospitals lack in this facility. What do you think, which surgical caps are best in avoiding operating room infections?
