The first six weeks after the birth is a crucial time for the health and survival of newborns and mothers. However, more than three in ten mothers and babies do not receive postnatal care worldwide, which leads to most infant and maternal deaths. To improve postnatal care globally and to support newborns and mothers, WHO has released guidelines for mothers, caregivers, healthcare personnel, and policy-makers. This article highlights the recommendations for maternal and newborn care in healthcare systems.
