The researchers at Rutgers University, US have found a compound which could be linked with caffeine to fight against two neurodegenerative disorders viz. Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. This research corroborates the earlier finding which suggested that drinking coffee may decrease the risk of developing Parkinson's disease. The researchers studied a compound called EHT (Eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide), a fatty acid derivative of the neurotransmitter serotonin, found in the bean's waxy coating.

In mice, EHT offered protection against the accumulation of abnormal protein in the brain. Interestingly, it was found that the combination of EHT and caffeine provides enhanced protection against the accumulation of harmful proteins in the brain.
