A research team led by Nephrology specialist Miguel Bigotte Vieira, reported a positive effect of caffeine on patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the form of lower mortality rate, regardless of variations in age, race, gender or other diseases. The study assessed the data collected over a decade (1999-2010), from 4683 Americans. It was observed that patients consuming higher levels of caffeine presented almost 25 % reduction in the risk of mortality compared to people consuming lesser caffeine, suggesting a potential protective effect.
The scientists hypothesised that the effect may be related with changes at vascular level since caffeine promotes release of Nitric Oxide, causing vasodilation.
