A newborn presented with seizures and respiratory distress . He had been born to a 29-year-old G1P0 after 37 weeks of gestation. He weighed 3.528 kg after birth and had an APGAR score of 1, 3, and 6 after 1, 5, and 10 minutes of birth, respectively. The patient’s blood was sent for culturing and was positive for E. coli . He also developed persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) and his condition began to deteriorate further.
He was put on high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, and an epinephrine drip. When the patient failed to respond, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was initiated five days after birth and a Foley catheter was placed.
