Highlights In aΒ  randomized clinical trial, oxycodone (strong opioid) did not provide superior pain relief compared with combination acetaminophen and codeine (mild opioid) when given to patients upon discharge following orthopedic surgical fixation for acute traumatic bone fracture/s. The study deems that mild opioids (combination of acetaminophen and codeine) fit to be a viable alternative to the standard practice of prescribing a strong opioid analgesic post-discharge after surgical management of orthopedic fractures. This Journal Watch discusses the study β€œ Effectiveness of Oxycodone Hydrochloride (Strong Opioid) vs Combination Acetaminophen and Codeine (Mild Opioid) for Subacute Pain After Fractures Managed Surgically A Randomized Clinical Trial ” from JAMA Network Open, 2021.
