Recent study titled ‘The burden of cancers and their variations across the states of India: The Global Burden of Disease Study 1990–2016,’ published in Lancet, has revealed that the death rate due to cancer is higher among females compared to their male counterparts, despite the incidence rate of cancer being higher among males as compared to females. The study was conducted with the support of the Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

In the state, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women resulting in death, and stomach cancer is the second most common cancer among women, followed by cervical, pharynx, colon and rectum cancer, gallbladder and biliary tract cancer, lung, ovarian, esophageal, lip and oral cavity cancer.
