Synopsis Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is very effective in preventing mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV during pregnancy. However, increased use of ART in pregnant women may also lead to adverse effects in mothers and newborns. Viral resistance, hepatic and dermatologic alterations, pre-eclampsia, and metabolic disturbances are the commonly observed maternal adverse effects. In this regard, the following MEDFACT describes the results of a clinical trial on an FDA approved drug, Dolutegravir (DTG), in the treatment of HIV-AIDS in pregnant women.

This weekโ€™s MEDFACT summarizes a trial โ€œ A Phase III Randomized Trial of the Safety and Antiretroviral safety and efficacy of DTG vs EFV and TDF vs TAF in pregnancy: impact 2010 trial, โ€ published in Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. 11th March,2020.
