Synopsis This study highlights the role of liposomal bupivacaine (LB) in reducing the opioid volume post third molar extraction. In the study, the researchers retrospectively collected data about 600 patients undergoing extraction of ≥ 1 partial bony—or full bony—impacted mandibular third molar at two oral surgery centers. Half of the patients were given LB while the other half were placebo. The researchers found that patients receiving LB required fewer opioid analgesics. This “ Journal Watch ” discusses the study “ A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study of the Effect of Liposomal Bupivacaine on Postoperative Opioid Prescribing After Third Molar Extraction ,” published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2021.
