In a recent meeting, Food and Drug Association (FDA) has issued a warning against the use of over the counter (OTC) baby teething products containing benzocaine. According to FDA kids don't need topical soothing medicines for their teething gums as they lack benefit and pose a serious risk to infants and children. Benzocaine belongs to a category of topical anesthetics and is used to relieve pain during sore throats and gum irritation. There are several gels, ointments, sprays and many other formulations containing benzocaine available in the market.

This measure was an outcome of the several studies which reported an association of benzocaine with methemoglobinemia, especially in kids below 2 years of age.
