The gut microbiota is part of the human body's active and complex ecosystem that is present in the gut and intestinal tract. It encompasses trillions of bacteria and weighs 1.5 kilograms. There is a symbiotic relationship between the gut microbiota and the body as it performs various vital functions. On the other hand, the rising burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major concern worldwide. Several studies suggest that environmental factors play a substantial role in the pathogenesis of T2DM. Additionally, recent clinical studies have detected that gut microbiota is one of the most significant environmental factors in the progression of T2DM.
