Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide. It can lead to cirrhosis and liver-related mortality. However, the major cause of mortality in this population is not a liver disease, but malignancy and cardiovascular disease.

An observational study was conducted during 1997-2017 to evaluate the prevalence of extrahepatic cancer in NAFLD. Results reported a 91% higher risk of malignancy among patients with NAFLD as compared to age- and sex-matched control subjects. Source: MDedge News
