The key role of acid in the pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been known for a long time. However, the fact that 20-40% of patients are partial or non-responders to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) suggests the implications of other factors in the development of GERD. 1 Impaired mucosal integrity has recently garnered attention as a therapeutic target. Therapy that focuses on mucosal protection along with acid suppression may be beneficial to curb this effect.
2 Evidence suggests that a combination treatment of sucralfate and PPI may be more effective in healing ulcer than PPI alone. 3 This infographic highlights why PPI-Sucralfate combination therapy is more beneficial than PPIs alone.
