Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and pathologic hypersecretory conditions. However, long-term use of PPIs has been associated with several adverse events such as hip fracture, iron deficiency, cardiac events, etc. This infographic discusses the concern of long-term adverse events of PPIs as a standalone therapy; highlighting the role of sucralfate with PPIs in optimizing PPI use.
