Highlights- An interesting case of a woman with refractory heartburn. Few refractory heartburn patients do not respond to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy alone. Sucralfate, a gastric cytoprotective drug, can be used as an adjunct therapy to PPIs for treating GERD patients. Clinical presentation and medical history A 35-year-old woman presented with a complaint of a burning sensation behind the chest bone that traveled towards the neck for the past three weeks. She reported that these symptoms occurred up to three times a week, and she would occasionally wake up in the middle of the night due to them.
