Several therapies are used to treat gastrointestinal conditions. One such therapy involves the use of cytoprotectants (mucoprotectants) that form a protective layer over the epithelium. Cytoprotectants like sucralfate protect the gastrointestinal epithelium from gastric acid and digestive enzymes. Sucralfate minimizes intestinal permeability and enhances the functionality of the intestinal barrier. 1 This infographic highlights role of the cytoprotectants in the management of GERD and other conditions such as peptic ulcer, radiation mucositis, and radiation proctitis.
