According to a recent report published in Science, a high fiber diet can promote certain groups of bacteria that can help in obtaining controlled glucose levels, improved weight loss, and better lipid levels. The report also emphasizes the need for dietary fibers in improving digestion and overall health. Gut microbiota produces Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA) after carbohydrate metabolism. It has been reported that SCFA deficiency is associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

In a randomized clinical trial, it was observed that SCFA producing strains were promoted in a high fiber diet. It was observed that when SCFA producing bacteria were present in greater numbers, participants in the trial showed improved hemoglobin A1c levels.
