Synopsis The vascular complications associated with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) are usually a result of increased activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) enzyme. T1DM is associated with abnormal synthesis of NO via activation of iNOS. The iNOS gene expression is stimulated through activation of transcription factors, such as nuclear factor-κB (NFκB).

Furthermore, stimulation of NFκB is induced by different stimuli, including extracellular-regulated kinases (ERK1/2) and protein kinase B (PKB, also known as Akt).
