In spite of the BCG vaccination in the early life, a full proof protection against Tuberculosis (TB) is not guaranteed. This is especially true for the drug-resistant TB. To curb the looming threat, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has proposed the clinical trials for two new TB vaccines: VPM1002 and M. indicus Pranii (MIP). Both the vaccines have been co-developed by Indian and foreign institutes and VPM1002 has previously studied for safety.
According to ICMR, the trials are going to start within 4-5 months and post-trial initial vaccination targets are the family members of the TB patients. Source: TOI What is your opinion regarding the step taken by ICMR? Do you believe that new TB-vaccines are the need of the hour?
