For the first time in the history of the Armed Forces Hospital, plaque brachytherapy was performed successfully at the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR), New Delhi. Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) produced the first indigenous Ruthenium 106 plaque that made this achievement possible. A 4-year-old boy was successfully treated with this innovative technique earlier this month. The boy had lost vision in his left eye due to retinoblastoma, and his right eye was also getting affected.

Despite undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy and cryotherapy, he was at risk of losing vision. With advancements in minimally invasive technologies, enucleation is no longer the primary means of treating ocular tumors.
