Post-menopausal women who used Metformin long-term for the treatment of diabetes may be at lower risk for developing certain cancers and dying from these diseases, reports a large prospective study from researchers at prominent universities of the US. Their analysis was based on data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a series of large studies undertaken to address common health issues in women. The team's findings were published in International Journal of Cancer, 7th April 2016. The study is based on about 1.5 lakh women.
Compared to women without diabetes, women with diabetes had a 13% higher risk of developing invasive cancer, especially colon, liver, pancreas, endometrium and Lymphoma. Results show that metformin use was associated with better survival in Diabetes patients already diagnosed with ovarian, colorectal and breast cancer. Source: rosewellpark.org
