Primary sclerosing cholangitis is an idiopathic chronic progressive disorder which is characterized by inflammation, fibrosis, and narrowing of the medium and large intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. The majority of the affected patients are believed to be suffering from an ulcerative colitis which acts as a contributing factor. The disorder is associated with numerous complications such as cholestasis, cholelithiasis, cholangiocarcinoma, colon cancer, and in some progressive cases, portal hypertension.
