Soon, we may see dentists becoming general physicians as the MCI is mulling over to approve the MBBS bridge course for BDS students. However, MCI has to sort out many complex issues first. Last year, the Dental Council Of India (DCI) had proposed a MBBS bridge course for BDS students to address the shortage of doctors in rural areas and provide employment to BDS students. Following the proposal, MCI has constituted Joint Study Group of MCI-DCI to specify the guidelines for this Bridge course.
However, MCI needs to sort out various issues such as what will be the course content, whether these students will be required to do one-year internship as per MBBS syllabus and whether these students will be registered with MCI/DCI. God knows how MCI is going to merge these totally different courses together. Source: New Indian Express Can dentists handle real world settings equally like MBBS?
