Approximately 1 in 8 children under ten years of age have some neurodevelopmental disorder in India, and about 1 in 100 children have autism. INCLEN Trust International conducted a first-ever community-based assessment of the prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders in Indian children. This survey encompassed a wider sample and found that the overall prevalence estimate for autism was about four times that revealed by a 2017 study.

The alarming rates call for public health action. The study identified risk factors like low birth weight and serious childhood illness, which can be addressed to prevent developmental problems. Source:  PLoS Med    What measures should be taken to minimize the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders?
