Many hospitals and health centers in rural India still lack an adequate number of doctors and state-of-the-art technology for prompt diagnosis of diseases. Under such circumstances, telemedicine has allowed doctors in rural areas to connect with experts and get a quick opinion to decide the future line of action. Telemedicine started in the civic-run KEM hospital in Mumbai in the year 2008 and has seen a steady increase in the number of patients consulting from rural areas.

At present, the telemedicine center in KEM gets around 30 calls per day for specialties ranging from radiology, dermatology to orthopedics. Source: DNA
