Salivary glands play a pivotal role in maintaining oral cavity homeostasis. They synthesize and secrete approximately 1.5 liters of saliva per day, which lubricates the oral mucosa and has antimicrobial, enzymatic, and immunological properties. The human salivary gland apparatus consists of three major glands: parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, and numerous minor salivary glands. Each gland contains a ducto-acinar unit that is composed of acinar cells, intercalated duct, striated duct, and excretory duct/collecting duct.
