A team of surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic, Abu Dhabi, used an innovative neuro-navigation technique to successfully remove a large billiard ball-sized brain tumor from a 34-year-old man. The patient had been suffering from blurred vision, arm weakness, and loss of speech for a decade. An MRI scan revealed a giant tumor at the base of the skull that was protruding into the brain and had developed its own blood supply. The location and the size of the tumor made the surgery complicated.
However, in an 8-hour long surgery, the surgeons used ‘brain GPS’ to obtain detailed 3D scans of the patient’s brain. This allowed the surgeons to precisely locate the tumor and avoid any damage to healthy tissue during excision of the tumor. Post-surgery the patient recovered well and is now living a healthy life.
