Some years ago , a medical school overseas experimented with taking students from an arts and social sciences background into medicine. They found that this cohort did just as well scholastically , and were better doctors from the soft skills point of view . I am not sure whether this turned into a practice, but the study does make a point. The becoming of a doctor, a effective doctor , has a lot more than what is taught in medical school. The problems faced by  young doctors today and the growing discontent from the public is a testimony of the huge gap that exists in the formation of the doctor.

From the safe confines of a medical school into the real world of medical practice is a culture shock. The doctor realises that there is a lot more to practice than writing prescriptions and performing procedures. And for this multifaceted role he/she is not prepared. Managing man, material,…
