To address the huge burden of tobacco-related ill health in Egypt, the Health Ministry in association with the United Nations has recently launched the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) 2030 project. The aim of this project is to reinforce tobacco control in low- and middle-income countries. In addition, the WHO is taking active measures to implement awareness programs and eliminate illicit tobacco trade in the country. Egypt has been a part of the WHO FCTC since 2005.

According to the WHO standardized survey, the estimated prevalence of smoking in Egypt among men is 43.6%. Furthermore, about 22.8% of Egypt’s total population are daily tobacco smokers.
