According to new research, older biologic age i.e. DNA-based estimate of a person’s age is associated with increased breast cancer risk. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute revealed that older biologic age of women increases the risk of development of breast cancer in the future. Further, the study found that biologic age of women was older than her actual age (chronological age) which is known as age acceleration, and for every five years, the risk of developing breast cancer increases by 15%.
To estimate biologic age, the researchers used three different measures called epigenetic clocks that determined DNA methylation at a specific location.
