According to studies, people wearing contact lenses are at an increased risk of developing rare eye infection known as Acanthamoeba keratitis. The research group from the University College London (UCL) found out the risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis is three times higher among people who wear lenses with poor hygiene. The incidence of eye infection increases among people who have poor hand hygiene while handling their contact lenses. The chances of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis increases by three times when people do not wash or dry their hands before handling their lenses.
Other factors which also puts an individual at higher risk for developing this disease are showering, face washing, and swimming while wearing lenses.
