It is common knowledge that air pollution is a significant health hazard and people who are continuously exposed to vehicular emission remain at a greater risk. A number of cross-sectional studies have been performed in India to evaluate the occupational risks that traffic-policemen face from air pollutants. The studies have revealed a significant reduction in forced vital capacity (FVC), slow vital capacity (SVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1), and maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV) as compared to control. Moreover, the decline in pulmonary function is directly related to the duration of exposure. Source: Gupta S, Mittal S, Kumar A, Singh KD.
