Knee osteoarthritis is the most prevalent among all chronic rheumatic diseases. End-stage knee osteoarthritis often leads to surgery for total knee arthroplasty , also known as total knee replacement . However, ‘ other than pain’ , until now there is no particular criteria that are used to decide whether the surgical intervention of total knee replacement is required or not. This may lead to two cases: (a) A potentially large proportion of patients not receiving sufficient conservative or non-operative treatment, (b) conditions are not improved for all patients following total knee replacement.
