On World Hypertension day let us accept the fact that in India, many people unknowingly suffer from hypertension. The incidence of hypertension in Indian adults has increased in the last three decades in urban and rural areas. In India, hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and a leading cause of death. Hypertension is a silent disease and doesn’t show any outward signs or symptoms but damages blood vessels and other organs.
A Global Burden of Diseases study has stated that hypertension has caused 1.63 million deaths in India since 2016. A consultant physician and diabetologist, KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, had said that “Previously, hypertension was defined as BP (blood pressure) exceeding 140/85 mmHg, but now it is defined as 130/80 mmHg and above.
